The Saiyan naming rule: everything is a vegetable
Akira Toriyama built Dragon Ball’s names out of running jokes, and the Saiyans got vegetables. Even the name of the race is a pun: Saiya is the Japanese word yasai, “vegetable”, with its syllables swapped. Once you know the rule, the whole cast opens up:
| Saiyan | Pun on | How it was made |
|---|---|---|
| Vegeta | vegetable | The word cut short |
| Kakarot (Goku’s Saiyan name) | carrot | Sound respelled, with an extra syllable at the front |
| Raditz | radish | Ending swapped for a harder sound |
| Nappa | napa cabbage | Used almost as it is |
| Bardock | burdock | One vowel changed |
| Broly | broccoli | Shortened |
| Gine | negi (green onion) | Japanese word reversed |
| Caulifla, Kale, Cabba | cauliflower, kale, cabbage | Shortened or used almost whole |
Half-Saiyans raised on Earth, such as Gohan (from gohan, rice), broke the pattern because humans named them, but a full-blooded Saiyan OC should follow it. That is the one thing that makes a Saiyan name feel right to fans.
How the generator builds a Saiyan name
The generator works from a curated list of more than 50 vegetables and fruits, each with hand-made male and female forms, and a second list of Japanese vegetable words that it reverses the way Gine was created. Every result tells you the source, so you can explain the joke in your fan fiction or character bio.
| Technique | Source word | Male form | Female form |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cut short | parsnip | Parsnik | Parsna |
| Harder ending (-tz, -x, -k) | spinach | Spinatz | Spinna |
| Respelled | zucchini | Zukkin | Zukka |
| Reversed Japanese | nasu (eggplant) | Usan | Usana |
| Reversed Japanese | kabocha (squash) | Ahcobak | Ahcoba |
Names that belong to existing characters are blocked, so you won’t get Vegeta, Kakarot or Broly back. With a list this size, some fan-made names may still match yours by coincidence.
Female and male Saiyan names
Female Saiyans are rare in the original series, but the later anime and films added Gine, Caulifla and Kale, and their names are softer: they usually end in a vowel, often -a. Male names tend to end in a hard consonant (Raditz, Bardock) or a clipped syllable (Vegeta, Nappa). The generator gives each vegetable a male form with a hard ending and a female form with a vowel ending, so a single source word can name a brother and sister.
Other naming jokes in Dragon Ball
Saiyans aren’t the only group with a theme, and knowing the others helps you avoid mixing them up. Frieza and his family are named after cold things (Frieza is “freezer”, and his brother Cooler follows the joke). Bulma’s family is named after underwear and clothing, which is how her children ended up as Trunks and Bulla. Many Namekians have names that play on the word for snail, such as Dende (from the Japanese dendenmushi) and Cargo (from escargot). If your OC is a Saiyan, stick to vegetables and fruit; if they are half-Saiyan and raised by humans, a food or clothing name like Gohan’s can work too.
How to use the Saiyan name generator
- Choose male, female or any.
- Choose the pun style: English vegetable and fruit puns, reversed Japanese words, or both.
- Pick a warrior class if you want one: low-class, mid-class, elite or royal.
- Press Generate. Each result shows the name, the vegetable or fruit it comes from, the class and a power level.
- Copy the names or export them as CSV, JSON or TXT. Copy link saves your settings.
Warrior classes and power levels
Saiyan society is ranked by fighting power, measured at birth. Low-class babies (like Kakarot) were sent to conquer weak planets, while elites stayed closer to the royal family. The class and power level in each result are for flavor: the numbers are fan-style estimates in the range the early series used, not official values. Use them to decide where your OC stood before Planet Vegeta was destroyed, and how far they have climbed since.
Tips for creating a Saiyan OC
- Say the pun out loud. The best Saiyan names are funny once you spot them and cool if you don’t. Artichok and Rutabo both work that way.
- Give siblings a matching theme. Pair two root vegetables, or two fruits, the way Toriyama grouped whole families under one joke.
- Remember the tail. Pure-blooded Saiyans are born with a tail, and a full moon can turn them into a giant ape. It makes a great scene in fan fiction.
- Decide their Earth name. Saiyans who grow up on Earth often get a second, human name. Pick one for your character too.

Frequently asked questions
How are Saiyan names made in Dragon Ball?
Saiyan names are puns on vegetables. Vegeta comes from vegetable, Kakarot from carrot, Raditz from radish and Bardock from burdock. Even the word Saiyan is the Japanese word yasai, vegetable, with its syllables swapped.
Does the generator show which vegetable a name comes from?
Yes. Every result names its source, such as parsnip or the Japanese word nasu (eggplant), so you can explain the pun in your character’s bio.
Can I generate female Saiyan names?
Yes. Set Gender to Female. Female forms end in a vowel, like Caulifla or Gine in the series, for example Parsna from parsnip or Usana from nasu.
Will I get existing Dragon Ball character names?
No. Canon Saiyan names such as Vegeta, Kakarot, Raditz, Nappa, Bardock and Broly are blocked, so every result is an original fan name.
What are the Saiyan warrior classes?
Saiyans were ranked by fighting power at birth, from low-class warriors to elites and the royal family. The generator adds a class and a fan-style power level for flavor.
Is this an official Dragon Ball tool?
