How dragonborn names work
According to the Player’s Handbook, a dragonborn has a personal name given at birth, but puts the clan name first as a mark of honor. Clutchmates also give each other a childhood name, a nickname that describes a habit or a memorable incident, and some dragonborn keep it for life. The generator produces all three and shows them in the formal order a dragonborn would use when introducing themselves.
| Part | What it is | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Clan name | Shared by the whole clan and said first; the clan’s honor matters more than the individual | Kerrhazar |
| Given name | Personal name chosen at hatching | Kazrath |
| Childhood name | Nickname from clutchmates, often teasing | “Stonechewer” |
| Formal introduction | Clan, then given name | Kerrhazar Kazrath, called Stonechewer |
At a table where other characters use given-name-first order, most players write their dragonborn’s name the everyday way (Kazrath Kerrhazar). The Order option lets you choose, and the formal version is always shown under each result.
Draconic ancestry and name sounds
Dragonborn are tied to a kind of dragon, which decides their breath weapon and damage resistance. The 2014 and 2024 Player’s Handbooks use the ten chromatic and metallic dragons; Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons added gem dragonborn. The rules don’t link ancestry to names, but giving each family its own sound makes a clan feel connected to its dragon, so the generator does exactly that.
| Family | Colors and breath damage | Name sound | Example name |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chromatic | Black (acid), Blue (lightning), Green (poison), Red (fire), White (cold) | Harsh and hissing: k, x, z, rr | Thraxesh Xyrvokk |
| Metallic | Brass (fire), Bronze (lightning), Copper (acid), Gold (fire), Silver (cold) | Noble and rolling: th, n, long vowels | Arathen Delmaranth |
| Gem | Amethyst (force), Crystal (radiant), Emerald (psychic), Sapphire (thunder), Topaz (necrotic) | Bright and ringing: i, y, s, l | Sylira Ithisyn |
Childhood names
Childhood names are the most fun part of dragonborn naming. They are given by clutchmates, not parents, so they tend to be blunt, affectionate or embarrassing: a young dragonborn who kept falling off ledges might be Wingstumble for the rest of their life. The generator has its own list of more than 30, from proud (Firstflier, Nestguard) to silly (Thunderhiccup, Dustsneezer). A childhood name is a ready-made story hook. Ask your DM whether an old clutchmate might turn up and use it in front of the party.
Male and female dragonborn names
Dragonborn names are not strongly gendered in the rules, but the example names in the books show a pattern that players tend to follow: male names often end in hard sounds (-ash, -ar, -esh, -ax) and female names in softer vowels (-a, -ith, -ira, -ess). The generator uses those endings when you choose a gender, and mixes them when you choose Any. Clan names and childhood names are the same for everyone.
How to use the dragonborn name generator
- Choose a draconic ancestry, or leave it on Any. You can also choose just a family: any chromatic, any metallic or any gem.
- Choose male, female or any.
- Pick the name order: everyday (given name first), formal (clan first) or given name only.
- Press Generate. Each result lists the childhood name, the ancestry and its breath damage, and what the clan is known for.
- Copy your favorites or export them as CSV, JSON or TXT. Copy link saves your settings.
Dragonborn in Baldur’s Gate 3
BG3 lets you create a dragonborn with any of the ten chromatic and metallic ancestries, and its character creator accepts any name you type. Generate with the ancestry you plan to pick so the name matches your breath weapon, and use the childhood name as a nickname in your character’s backstory. Gem ancestries are not available in BG3, but they work in tabletop games that use Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons.
Tips for naming a dragonborn
- Make the clan matter. Dragonborn care deeply about clan honor. Decide whether your character is proud of the clan, trying to restore its name, or cast out from it.
- Keep the given name sayable. Two syllables is plenty for a name your party will shout in combat.
- Use the clan reputation. A dragonborn from a clan of famous smiths who became a wizard is already a story.
- Share a clan with an NPC. Generate several names with the same ancestry and give one of the clan names to a rival or mentor.
All names are randomly generated from original syllables. This is an unofficial fan tool, not affiliated with Wizards of the Coast or Larian Studios.
Frequently asked questions
How do dragonborn names work in D&D 5e?
A dragonborn has a clan name, a given name and often a childhood name. The clan name is said first as a mark of honor, so a formal introduction is clan name, then given name.
What is a dragonborn childhood name?
It is a nickname given by clutchmates, usually describing a habit or something the young dragonborn did, such as Stonechewer or Wingstumble. Some dragonborn keep it as adults.
Which dragon ancestries does the generator include?
All fifteen: chromatic (black, blue, green, red, white), metallic (brass, bronze, copper, gold, silver) and gem (amethyst, crystal, emerald, sapphire, topaz). Each result shows the breath damage type.
Can I generate female dragonborn names?
Yes. Set Gender to Female for names with softer endings such as -ira, -ith and -ess. Clan names and childhood names work for any dragonborn.
Can I use these names in Baldur’s Gate 3?
Yes. BG3 accepts any name in its character creator. Choose one of the ten chromatic or metallic ancestries, as gem dragonborn are not in BG3.
Are these names from the official books?
No. Every name is built from original syllables, so any match with an official character is coincidence.
