Random Fantasy Name Generator

Generate names for fantasy characters, dwarves, towns, taverns and schools. Pick a race and gender or leave them on Any, generate up to 50 at once, and export the list for your novel, campaign or game.

What this fantasy name generator makes

Names are assembled from syllables and word parts chosen for each race’s sound, so you get thousands of combinations rather than a short fixed list. Elves get flowing vowels and nature surnames (Laeriel Moonwhisper), dwarves get hard consonants and clan names (Brombur Ironbeard), orcs get guttural names with an epithet (Zuggash the Ironjaw). All names are invented; if one happens to match an existing character, that is coincidence.

    Random dwarf name generator

The Dwarf names mode gives each dwarf a given name, a two-part family name, a clan and a trade, for example Durgar Deepdelver - Clan Coppervein, runesmith. Male names use hard endings such as -in, -grim and -rak; female names end in -hild, -dis or -run. Clan names combine a metal, stone or fire word with a body part or tool (Iron + beard, Stone + fist, Anvil + helm), the convention used across Tolkien-inspired fantasy and tabletop games.

    Fantasy place and tavern names

The Place names mode covers what a map needs: towns (Ravenmoor, Briarwatch), kingdoms (Valoria, Thalheim), forests, mountain ranges (The Ember Spine), rivers and taverns for your adventurers to start in (The Crooked Lantern).

    Random school name generator

The School names mode makes fictional schools for stories, games and mock-ups. The Realistic style produces names such as Cedar Falls High School with a mascot and school colors, at elementary, middle, high school or college level. The Fantasy magic academy style produces names like Ravenspire Academy of Arcane Arts with four houses. The names are made up; because many real schools share common names, check before using one publicly.

    Tips for naming fantasy characters

    Frequently asked questions

Which races does the fantasy name generator support?

Eight: Human, Elf, Dwarf, Orc, Halfling, Gnome, Tiefling and Dragonborn. Choose one from the Race filter, or leave it on Any race for a mixed list.

    Are the generated names original?

Yes. They are assembled from syllables and word parts, so most results are new combinations. A name may occasionally match an existing book or game character by coincidence, so search it before publishing.

    How do dwarf names work?

Dwarf names pair a short, hard-sounding given name with a family name built from a metal or stone word and a tool or body part, such as Thorgrim Anvilfist. Each result also gets a clan and a trade.

Can I generate a name for a school?

Yes. The School names mode makes fictional realistic schools with a mascot and colors, or fantasy magic academies with houses. They are made-up names for fiction, games and mock-ups.

Can I use these names in my book or game?

Yes. The names are generated for you to use freely in novels, tabletop campaigns, video games and online play.

How many names can I generate at once?

Up to 50 per click. With No repeats on, the same name will not appear twice in the session.
