Random Last Name Generator

Generate real, common surnames from 21 naming traditions. Filter by origin and starting letter, generate up to 50 at once, and copy or export the list for characters, games, rosters or test data. Need first names too? Use the random name generator.

Random last names from 21 origins

The Last names mode picks from 419 real surnames. Each result shows the naming tradition it is most associated with, so you can keep a family or a fictional town consistent: Murphy and Gallagher are Irish, Rossi and Esposito Italian, Tanaka and Watanabe Japanese, Okafor and Adeyemi Nigerian. Many surnames are shared by several cultures; the label shows a common origin, not every one.

    Surnames by origin

Origins help keep a fictional family, town or cast consistent. Many surnames began as a description: occupations (Smith, Baker, Müller is German for miller, Ferrari comes from the Italian for blacksmith), places (Hill, van den Berg, “from the mountain”), a father’s name (Johnson, Hansen, Rodriguez, Ivanov) or a nickname (Brown, Klein, “small”). Patronymic endings such as -son, -sen, -ez and -ov all mean “son of”.

For first names, or full names that pair a first name with a surname from the same culture, use the random name generator.

    Frequently asked questions

    Are these real last names?

Yes. All 419 surnames are real, common family names. The ten shown in the table are the most common surnames in the 2010 US Census, and the rest cover 21 naming traditions around the world.

Can I generate a last name from a specific country or culture?

Yes. Use the Origin filter to pick from 21 origins such as Irish, Italian, German, Chinese, Japanese, Indian or Nigerian. Many surnames exist in more than one culture, so the label shows a common origin.

Can I get a first name as well?

This page generates surnames only. The random name generator makes first names and full names, with a surname from the same origin as the first name.

Can I use the surnames as test data?

Yes. Generate up to 50 at once and export them as CSV or JSON to seed a last_name column or build a sample roster.

Will I get the same surname twice?

Not while No repeats is on. The generator works through every matching surname before any can repeat, and tells you when the list resets.
