How to make Old English text
- Type a name, word or short phrase. The preview updates as you type.
- Pick a style. Old English bold is the closest to classic tattoo and jersey lettering. Name style sets the first letter of each word heavier, the way a sign painter would.
- Copy with the button or by tapping the preview.
- Paste into a bio, caption, gamer tag, Discord name, or a note you will show your tattoo artist.
Where “Old English” lettering comes from
The letters people call Old English are a kind of blackletter named after a Victorian typeface, Old English Text, which revived the Textura scripts used in 14th and 15th-century English and Flemish books. It has nothing to do with the Old English language of Beowulf, which was written in a rounded insular hand centuries earlier.
The typeface became a shorthand for tradition and authority: newspaper mastheads (The New York Times and The Washington Post nameplates are blackletter), diplomas, church signs and beer labels. In the late 20th century it moved to the street. Chicano tattoo artists in East Los Angeles, hip-hop album covers and streetwear brands made heavy blackletter a symbol of pride, neighborhood and toughness. That is why searches for Old English fonts overlap so much with tattoo, chicano and gangster lettering.
This is Unicode text, not a font
The generator does not install or embed a font. It swaps each letter A–Z and a–z for a character from Unicode’s Mathematical Bold Fraktur (U+1D56C–U+1D59F) or Mathematical Fraktur (U+1D504–U+1D537) alphabets. Those characters exist for mathematical notation, but they happen to look like blackletter, and because they are characters rather than formatting they survive copy and paste into Instagram, TikTok, X, Facebook, Discord, Twitch, Roblox chat and most messaging apps.
Five capitals in the lighter Fraktur set live elsewhere: ℭ U+212D, ℌ U+210C, ℑ U+2111, ℜ U+211C and ℨ U+2128. The tool uses those exact code points, so no letter ever comes out as an empty box.

Digits have no blackletter form in Unicode, so 0–9 are copied as normal numbers. For dates on a tattoo, many people write numbers in Roman numerals instead, which blackletter handles well; the Roman numeral tattoo generator converts dates such as birthdays, or you can spell the year out in words.
Previewing an Old English tattoo
Lettering tattoos are permanent, and blackletter hides spelling mistakes well until someone reads it closely. Use this page to check the basics before you book:
- Spelling first. Type the words in plain letters, read them twice, then look at the styled version. Names with accents keep their accent marks.
- Legibility. Blackletter confuses similar letters: n and u, m and w, c and t, and capitals like 𝕲 (G) and 𝕶 (K). Try the Heavy capitals style to see if the word still reads at a glance.
- Length and placement. Long phrases in blackletter get dense. Across the stomach or back a longer phrase can work; on fingers or wrists stick to short words.
- Final artwork. Treat the result as a mock-up. The glyphs are drawn by your device’s fallback font, not by a tattoo designer. A good artist will adapt a real blackletter face, adjust spacing and flourishes, and size it for your skin. Chicano lettering in particular is a hand-drawn craft with its own rules.
Limits worth knowing
- Screen readers may read each letter as “mathematical bold fraktur capital” followed by the letter, or skip it. Keep your real name or key details in plain text in a bio.
- Search on most platforms does not match these characters to plain letters, so a styled name is harder to find.
- Old devices without a font covering Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols show boxes.
- Printing: for a flyer, shirt or logo, install a genuine blackletter typeface instead so you get real kerning, ligatures and vector quality.
Frequently asked questions
Is Old English font the same as the Old English language?
No. Old English the language (Anglo-Saxon, roughly 450 to 1150 AD) was written in insular script, which looks nothing like the letters called Old English today. The name comes from Old English Text, a 19th-century blackletter typeface based on the Textura scripts of the later Middle Ages.
How do I copy and paste Old English text?
Type your text, then click Copy on the style you like, or tap the preview itself. Paste it anywhere that accepts text. The letters are Unicode Fraktur characters, so they keep their shape without needing a font installed.
Can I use this for an Old English tattoo?
Use it to preview spelling, word length and which letters look good together. Do not send a screenshot as the final stencil. The glyphs come from your phone's system font at low resolution. Your tattoo artist should draw from a real blackletter font or hand letter the piece.
What is chicano or gangster lettering?
Chicano lettering is a style of blackletter and script developed in Mexican-American communities in Los Angeles, seen in tattoos, murals, lowrider art and placas. Gangster lettering is a loose term for the same heavy blackletter look. Real chicano lettering is hand drawn with custom flourishes that no Unicode text can reproduce.
Why do some letters look different from the rest?
In the lighter Fraktur style, the capitals C, H, I, R and Z come from Unicode's Letterlike Symbols block because they were encoded before the Mathematical Fraktur alphabet. They can render in a different font. The bold style has no such gaps.
Does Old English text work on Instagram, TikTok and Discord?
Yes, in bios, display names, captions, comments and messages. It does not work in usernames or handles that only accept basic letters, numbers and underscores, and screen readers may not read it properly.
