How to use the gothic font generator
- Type your text in the box: a name, a band title, a server name or a caption.
- Compare the styles. Gothic (Fraktur) is the lighter traditional form; Bold gothic has heavier strokes that read better at small sizes on phones. Bold capitals and Illuminated initials mimic how manuscripts set capitals heavier than the text around them.
- Click Copy or tap the preview.
- Paste into your bio, display name, post or chat. The style travels with the text because the letters themselves are gothic characters.
What “gothic” lettering actually is
The letters most people call gothic are blackletter. Scribes in 12th-century northern Europe compressed round Carolingian letters into narrow, angular strokes to fit more text on expensive vellum. The page looked dark, hence the name. Several families grew out of it:
| Style | Era and region | What it looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Textura | 13th–15th c., northern Europe | Tall, rigid, woven look; used in the Gutenberg Bible. The source of most “Old English” fonts. |
| Rotunda | Italy and Spain | Rounder and more open; less spiky than Textura. |
| Schwabacher | 15th–16th c., Germany | Rounded bowls and a lively, informal rhythm; used for Luther-era printing. |
| Fraktur | 16th c. to 1941, German-speaking lands | Broken (“fractured”) curves, elaborate capitals. This is the form Unicode’s Mathematical Fraktur characters imitate. |
The label “gothic” itself was an insult coined by Renaissance humanists who considered the style barbaric compared with Roman letters. Today it signals heavy metal, streetwear, dark academia and goth aesthetics. Confusingly, American type foundries in the 1800s also called sans-serif type “gothic” (Franklin Gothic, News Gothic, Century Gothic), which is why a search for gothic fonts turns up both.
Why the output is Unicode, not a font
Instagram, TikTok and Discord render every bio and message in their own system font. To show gothic letters anyway, this generator swaps each letter for a character from the Mathematical Fraktur (U+1D504–U+1D537) or Bold Fraktur (U+1D56C–U+1D59F) alphabets. Mathematicians use these to name Lie algebras and ideals; everyone else uses them because they look medieval. Since the style lives in the characters, it survives copy and paste into almost any text field.
The five missing capitals
Mathematical Fraktur has five holes. ℭ (C), ℌ (H), ℑ (I), ℜ (R) and ℨ (Z) were already encoded as Letterlike Symbols (ℜ and ℑ are the real and imaginary part symbols), so the standard points to those instead of duplicating them. This tool uses the correct older code points, so words like “ℌ𝔞𝔯𝔯𝔶” never show blank boxes.
| Letter | Fraktur | Code point | Bold Fraktur | Code point |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | 𝔄 | U+1D504 | 𝕬 | U+1D56C |
| C | ℭ | U+212D (exception) | 𝕮 | U+1D56E |
| H | ℌ | U+210C (exception) | 𝕳 | U+1D573 |
| I | ℑ | U+2111 (exception) | 𝕴 | U+1D574 |
| R | ℜ | U+211C (exception) | 𝕽 | U+1D57D |
| Z | ℨ | U+2128 (exception) | 𝖅 | U+1D585 |
| a | 𝔞 | U+1D51E | 𝖆 | U+1D586 |
| z | 𝔷 | U+1D537 | 𝖟 | U+1D59F |
Reading tips: blackletter is hard at small sizes
Several Fraktur letters are easy to confuse, especially on a phone: 𝔟 and 𝔳 (b and v), 𝔦 and 𝔫 (i and n), 𝔐 and 𝔚 (M and W), and the capitals 𝔊 and 𝔎 (G and K) look alike to readers used to Roman type. A few practical rules:
- Prefer Bold gothic for display names and anything viewed at small size.
- Use Bold capitals for names: a heavy initial makes each word’s start obvious.
- Avoid ALL CAPS for more than a word or two. Blackletter capitals were never meant to be set together, and long all-caps strings become unreadable.
- Keep handles, links and important details in normal text so people can search for and read them.
Accessibility and compatibility
Screen readers such as VoiceOver and TalkBack may announce each character by its full name (“mathematical bold fraktur capital D”) or skip it, so a gothic bio can be meaningless to a blind visitor. Search engines and in-app search usually do not match the styled letters to plain words either. On old Android versions, some smart TVs and embedded browsers the characters may show as boxes. Current iOS, Android, Windows, macOS and Linux desktops display them correctly.
Tattoos, logos and print
Gothic lettering is popular for tattoos, but treat this page as a preview only. The glyphs you see come from whatever font your phone uses, they are low resolution, and you cannot adjust spacing or ligatures. For a tattoo, a logo or anything printed, use a real blackletter typeface (for example UnifrakturMaguntia, Pirata One or a licensed Textura) or have an artist hand-letter the design. For tattoo-style lettering specifically, see the Old English font generator.
Frequently asked questions
What is a gothic font?
In lettering, gothic usually means blackletter: the dense, angular script used in European manuscripts and early printed books from about the 12th to the 17th century, with styles such as Textura, Rotunda, Schwabacher and Fraktur. In modern typography the word also names plain sans-serif faces like Franklin Gothic, which is a different thing entirely.
Is the gothic text from this generator a font?
No. It uses the Mathematical Fraktur and Bold Fraktur letters in Unicode. Each output letter is a separate character, so it looks gothic wherever you paste it, even in apps that do not let you choose a font.
Why do C, H, I, R and Z look different from the other gothic letters?
Those five Fraktur capitals were already in Unicode as Letterlike Symbols (U+212D, U+210C, U+2111, U+211C and U+2128) before the Mathematical Fraktur block was added, so the block leaves gaps and the older characters are used instead. On some devices they come from a different font. Bold Fraktur has no gaps.
Can I get gothic numbers?
Unicode has no Fraktur digits, so numbers stay as normal numerals. If you need styled numbers, the double-struck style includes outline digits 0 to 9.
Where does gothic text work?
Instagram and TikTok bios, Discord names and messages, X posts, Facebook posts, YouTube comments, Twitch chat and most games that accept emoji. It will not work in usernames or handles that only allow basic letters and numbers.
Can I use this gothic text for a tattoo?
Use it only to preview a word or name. The characters render in whatever font your device has, at small sizes and with no control over spacing. A tattoo artist should work from a real blackletter typeface or custom hand lettering at full resolution.
Is gothic text accessible?
Not very. Screen readers may read each letter as mathematical fraktur capital, or skip it. Use gothic lettering for a short name or title and keep essential information in plain text.
