What you can do here

How to use the character generator

Choose a Profile type, set how many characters you want and press Generate. Every field is picked at random, so press again for a new cast. Copy sends the whole list to your clipboard for your notes, campaign document or manuscript.

Fantasy and D&D characters

The fantasy profile uses classic tabletop races, classes and alignments, so it works as an NPC, a quick player character or a novel protagonist. Tick Add D&D ability scores to roll six stats with the 4d6-drop-lowest method.

Name: Aeith Starbloom
Race: Orc
Class: Fighter
Alignment: Chaotic Good
Background: Disgraced noble
Personality: A terrible liar
Goal: To protect a younger sibling at any cost
Flaw: Trusts the wrong people

The goal and flaw pull against each other on purpose: that tension is what makes a character interesting to play or write.

Random modern character generator

For contemporary stories, role-play and writing exercises, the Modern realistic character type gives a ready-to-write profile, for example Diego Brooks, 75, a wedding photographer who is dry-humored, wants to find where they truly belong and keeps a notebook of overheard conversations.

Personality generator

The Personality profile type returns an archetype with a one-line summary, two strengths, a weakness and a habit. Use it as a starting point for a character's motivations, or as a party icebreaker. A mentor figure, for example, suits the patient, planning nature of The Quiet Strategist.

Character trait generator and writing prompts

The Character traits list type returns trait words such as loyal, witty, stubborn; choose positive traits, negative traits (flaws), neutral traits or a mix, and how many per character. Teachers use trait lists for character-analysis lessons and writers use them to round out a cast. The Character writing prompt type combines a role, a story and a complication, such as A night-market clockmaker in a story about a missing festival lantern, while hiding an injury that is getting worse.
