How to remove a background online

How this background remover works
The tool uses RMBG-1.4, an open segmentation model from BRIA AI trained to separate a foreground subject from its background. It runs through Transformers.js and ONNX Runtime Web in WebAssembly, so all the maths happens on your processor. The model looks at a 1024 × 1024 version of your photo and returns a matte: a greyscale map where white means “keep”, black means “remove”, and greys are partial transparency along soft edges such as hair. That matte is scaled back to your photo's full size and applied as the alpha channel.
Because nothing is sent to a server, there are no credits, queues or daily limits. The trade-off is that speed depends on your device: a recent laptop handles a 12-megapixel photo in a few seconds, while an older phone can take 20 seconds or more.

Transparent PNG vs white background
A transparent PNG is what you want for layering the cut-out onto a slide, a website, a thumbnail or another photo. A white background is what most marketplaces (Amazon, Flipkart, Meesho), passport photos and ID forms ask for, and it can be saved as a smaller JPG. If you are unsure, download the transparent PNG — you can always add a background later, but you cannot recover transparency from a JPG.
Background colours people commonly need
- Pure white (#FFFFFF): e-commerce main images, Indian passport and PAN photos, US passport and visa photos.

Getting the cleanest cut-out
- Start from the largest, sharpest version of the photo you have. Screenshots of photos lose edge detail.
- Make sure the whole subject is in frame; objects cut off by the image edge are harder to separate.
- Stand a step away from the wall when shooting so the subject does not cast a hard shadow on it.
- After removal, crop and size the result for its destination, and compress it if a form has a KB limit.

Is this background remover really free, with no upload?
Yes. The AI model is downloaded to your browser once and runs on your own device, so there is no server doing the work, no per-image charge, no watermark and no sign-up. Your photo is never uploaded.
Why does the first image take longer?
The first time you use the tool the browser downloads the model, about 45 MB. The browser caches it, so later images on the same device usually process in a few seconds.
How do I make the background white instead of transparent?
After the background is removed, choose White under Background. You can also pick any colour or a blurred version of the original photo, then download as PNG or JPG.
What kinds of photos does it handle badly?
Fine or flyaway hair against a busy background, glass and other see-through objects, subjects that are the same colour as the background, and group photos where you want only one person. Check the edges at full size and use the edge cleanup slider; for difficult images a manual editor gives better control.
Does it reduce the resolution of my image?
The output keeps your photo's original pixel size up to 4096 pixels on the longest side. The model predicts the mask at 1024 × 1024 and it is scaled up to match, so very fine edge detail on large images can be slightly soft.
