How to make a passport photo online
- Take the photo. Stand about half a metre in front of a plain white or light wall, face a window or diffuse light, and have someone take the picture from about 1.2 m away at eye level. Keep a neutral expression with your mouth closed.
- Choose the country and document. The size, head-height guide and recommended background colour update automatically.
- Line up your face. Drag and zoom until the top of your hair sits on the dashed crown line and your chin falls inside the green band. Straighten the slider if your head is tilted.
- Clean up. If the wall is slightly grey or shadowed, tick Whiten plain background and adjust the tolerance until the wall turns white without eating into your hair.
- Download. Save the 4×6 print sheet and print it at a photo shop, or save the single photo for an online application.

Indian passport photo size and requirements
For a new or renewed Indian passport, the standard printed photo is 35 × 45 mm (3.5 × 4.5 cm), in colour, on a plain white background. In practice:
- Face the camera directly with both ears roughly visible, eyes open, mouth closed and a neutral expression.
- The face should fill most of the frame: in a 45 mm tall photo the head from chin to crown is about 32–36 mm.
- No shadows on the face or the background, no red-eye, no glare on spectacles (removing glasses is safest).
- Dark clothing on a white background photographs best; avoid white shirts that merge into the background.
- Head coverings are allowed only for religious reasons, and the full face must be visible.

US passports and visas use a 2 × 2 inch square, 600 × 600 px at 300 DPI, with the head 1 to 1⅜ inches tall and the eyes 1⅛ to 1⅜ inches from the bottom. For the DS-160 online visa form the digital photo must be square, between 600 × 600 and 1200 × 1200 px, JPEG, and no larger than 240 KB. Printing it correctly
- Order a standard 4×6 (or 5×7) glossy or matte photo print of the downloaded JPG. Tell the shop no cropping, no borders.
- At home, print on 4×6 photo paper with the scale set to 100% or Actual size. “Fit to page” changes the size.
- Measure one printed photo with a ruler before cutting; it should match the size in the table exactly.
Why passport photos get rejected
