How Warrior Cat names are built
In the Warriors series by Erin Hunter, a Clan cat’s name has two parts. The prefix is given at birth by the kit’s mother and stays for life; it is almost always something a forest cat would know, such as a plant, animal, color, weather or landscape word (Ash, Bramble, Moss, Sparrow, Frost). The suffix changes as the cat moves up the ranks, and it is what makes a warrior name feel earned. This generator follows those same rules: it picks a prefix, then builds the name for the rank you choose, and shows how that cat’s name would change over its life.
| Rank | Name form | Example | When it changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kit | Prefix + kit | Sorrelkit | Named by its mother at birth |
| Apprentice | Prefix + paw | Sorrelpaw | At six moons, when a mentor is assigned |
| Warrior | Prefix + chosen suffix | Sorrelwhisker | At the warrior ceremony, from the leader |
| Deputy, medicine cat, elder | Keeps the warrior name | Sorrelwhisker | Name does not change |
| Leader | Prefix + star | Sorrelstar | On receiving nine lives from StarClan |
The best-known example from the books is the series’ first hero: a kittypet called Rusty joins ThunderClan as Firepaw, becomes the warrior Fireheart and finally leads the Clan as Firestar. The prefix stays; only the ending moves with his rank.
How to use the generator
- Choose a rank. Warrior gives a full two-part name; Kit, Apprentice and Leader give the -kit, -paw and -star forms.
- Pick a Clan for territory-flavored prefixes, or leave it on Any Clan.
- Choose tom or she-cat and, if you like, a personality. Personality steers the suffix: a fierce cat is more likely to end in -fang or -scar, a gentle one in -song or -petal.
- Set how many cats you want and press Generate. Each result lists every stage of the cat’s name, plus a description you can use as a starting point for your OC.
- Copy the list, export it as CSV, JSON or TXT, or use Copy link to share your exact settings.
Clan territories and the words they use
Each Clan lives in a different landscape, and the names in the books reflect what their cats see every day. Choosing a Clan makes the generator favor prefixes from that territory while still mixing in common ones.
| Clan | Territory | Typical prefixes | Example names |
|---|---|---|---|
| ThunderClan | Dense oak forest | Bramble, Oak, Fern, Holly, Bracken, Beech | Brackentail, Hollyfur |
| RiverClan | Rivers and reed beds | Reed, Otter, Minnow, Ripple, Heron, Sedge | Minnowsplash, Reedwhisker |
| WindClan | Open moorland | Gorse, Hare, Heather, Kestrel, Swift, Lark | Gorsestep, Harebreeze |
| ShadowClan | Pine forest and marsh | Pine, Toad, Night, Adder, Slate, Juniper | Adderfang, Toadpelt |
| SkyClan | Gorge and high trees | Sky, Cloud, Sparrow, Echo, Plum, Finch | Echoheart, Sparrowleap |
Warrior cat names with descriptions
Every generated cat gets a short profile: build, pelt color and pattern, eye color, one distinguishing mark and a personality line. Where the prefix already describes a color (Ash, Sand, Raven, Russet, Snow, Tawny) the pelt matches it, so an Ashpelt is a gray cat and a Russetfoot is reddish-brown, as it would be in the books. Other prefixes, like Thistle or Lark, get a random pelt. Treat the description as a prompt: change anything that doesn’t fit the character you have in mind.
Choosing a name based on personality
Clan leaders often choose a suffix that honors something about the cat, such as courage, speed, loyalty or a striking feature. The personality filter uses the same idea.
| Personality | Suffixes it favors | Sample name |
|---|---|---|
| Brave | -heart, -claw, -strike, -blaze | Emberheart |
| Loyal | -heart, -pelt, -stripe, -step | Mosspelt |
| Gentle | -song, -petal, -breeze, -feather | Dovesong |
| Clever | -whisker, -eye, -ear, -sight | Owlwhisker |
| Fierce | -fang, -scar, -jaw, -claw | Thornfang |
| Quick | -foot, -leap, -flight, -dash | Swiftleap |
| Shy or quiet | -whisker, -tail, -mist, -fern | Wrenmist |
| Playful | -tail, -leap, -splash, -spot | Pebblesplash |
| Mysterious | -shade, -mist, -shadow, -night | Slateshadow |
Female and male warrior cat names
Warriors names are not strictly gendered: toms and she-cats share almost every prefix and suffix. Some endings do lean one way in fan naming, though. Soft words like -petal, -song, -flower and -feather feel more natural for she-cats, while -fang, -jaw, -strike and -claw are used more for toms. When you pick a gender, the generator adds those leaning suffixes to the shared pool rather than locking you into them, so a she-cat can still come out as Hawkclaw.
Rogues, loners and kittypets
Cats outside the Clans don’t follow the prefix + suffix rule. Rogues and loners usually go by a single hard word, and kittypets carry the names their Twolegs gave them. Switch the mode to Rogues & kittypets for names like these; they are also useful for a kittypet OC who will later join a Clan and earn an apprentice name.
Tips for a great OC name
- Keep it in the forest. A Clan cat wouldn’t know words like “Diamond” or “Galaxy”. Nature words sound right.
- Say it three ways. Check that the kit, apprentice and warrior forms all sound good, because your cat will carry each one.
- Avoid existing characters. The series has hundreds of named cats. Search a name you love before using it in fan fiction or a roleplay group.
- Watch the double letters. Names like Mossstep are hard to read. Pick another suffix if the letters pile up.

Frequently asked questions
How do Warrior Cat names work?
A Clan name is a prefix plus a suffix. The prefix is given at birth and never changes. The suffix shows rank: -kit for kits, -paw for apprentices, a chosen ending such as -heart or -tail for warriors, and -star for the Clan leader.
When does a cat get the -star suffix?
Only the Clan leader has a -star name. In the books a new leader receives nine lives from StarClan and takes the -star suffix in place of their warrior suffix.
Do deputies and medicine cats get special names?
No. Deputies, medicine cats and elders keep the warrior name they already have. Only kits, apprentices and leaders use rank suffixes.
Can I generate a warrior cat name based on personality?
Yes. Choose a personality such as brave, gentle, clever or fierce. The generator favors suffixes that match it and writes a personality line into the description.
Are there separate female warrior cat names?
The books share most names between toms and she-cats. Choosing she-cat adds softer endings such as -petal and -song to the pool, and each description uses she-cat or tom.
Can I use these names for my OC or fan fiction?
Yes. The names are randomly generated for fan fiction, roleplay and games. Some combinations may match a character from the books by chance, so search a name before you use it.
