What you can do here

How to use the random state generator

Press Generate to pick one of the 50 US states. The card shows the two-letter postal abbreviation, capital, Census region, the year it joined the Union, its nickname and its largest city. Set How many for several states, keep No repeats ticked, or use All 50 shuffled for the whole list in random order. Include Washington, D.C. and the five inhabited territories (Puerto Rico, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa and the Northern Mariana Islands) if you need them.

States by region

Census regionStates
Northeast (9)CT, ME, MA, NH, NJ, NY, PA, RI, VT
Midwest (12)IL, IN, IA, KS, MI, MN, MO, NE, ND, OH, SD, WI
South (16 + DC)AL, AR, DE, FL, GA, KY, LA, MD, MS, NC, OK, SC, TN, TX, VA, WV
West (13)AK, AZ, CA, CO, HI, ID, MT, NV, NM, OR, UT, WA, WY

The Joined the Union filter picks from the original 13 colonies, states admitted between 1791 and 1899, or the five admitted in the 20th century: Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona, Alaska and Hawaii.

Random state and capital quiz

Use State + capital for a study list, or show only the state and ask for the capital before clicking the card. Classic surprises: the capital of California is Sacramento, not Los Angeles; New York's is Albany; Illinois's is Springfield; and Florida's is Tallahassee. The abbreviation view helps with postal codes that trip people up, such as AK (Alaska) versus AR (Arkansas), and MI, MN, MS and MO.
