What you can do here

How to use the random city generator

Press Generate for a random real city from 237 cities on every continent, from megacities like Tokyo and São Paulo to small places like Reykjavík and Queenstown. Each card shows the country (and state or province for the US, Canada, Australia and India), the continent, rough metro population and coordinates. Filter by continent, capital cities, US cities or size, set How many and keep No repeats ticked for a list of different cities. Switch Show to Full details for coordinates and population in the text output and CSV.

Random town name generator

Set Generate to Town names (made up) for invented place names in three styles: English village names like Ashbury or Thornleigh on Sea, American small town names like Cedar Falls Junction or Fort Maplewood, and fantasy names like Kaelmire or Frosthold Crossing. Each town gets a population and something it is known for, ready for novels, tabletop RPG maps, games and school projects. The names are generated, so any match with a real town is coincidence.

Random location generator

Choose Random location (coordinates) to get a random point as decimal latitude and longitude plus degrees-minutes-seconds, the distance to the nearest listed city and a Google Maps link in the full output. Anywhere on Earth picks a truly uniform point on the globe, so about 70% of results land in the ocean; Within 10, 50 or 200 km of a city keeps points near where people live, and the continent filter still applies. Use it for geography games, virtual travel with Street View, photography challenges or map test data.

It is a quick prompt for drawing, writing, game levels and worldbuilding.

Frequently asked questions

How many cities can it pick from?

237 real cities across all six inhabited continents, including every major world city, most national capitals of large countries and around 50 US cities with their states.

Can I get a random US city?

Yes. Set Which cities to US cities only, or open ?mode=us-city. Each result includes the state, for example Nashville, Tennessee.

How does the random town name generator work?

It combines real English, American and fantasy naming patterns, such as a root like Ash or Kael with an ending like -bury, Falls or -hold, then adds a population and a local claim to fame. The towns are fictional.

Are random locations on land?

Anywhere on Earth is a uniform random point, so most land in the ocean. Choose Within 10, 50 or 200 km of a city to stay near populated land; points near the coast can still fall in water.

What is the random environment generator for?

It picks a setting such as a salt flat, kelp forest or neon-lit city, with a short description, as a prompt for art, stories, games and worldbuilding.
