Random Phone Number Generator

Generate fictional US, Canadian, UK and Australian phone numbers with real area codes, in any common format, or list random US area codes by state.

These numbers are fictional test data. Do not call or text them, and do not use them for sign-ups, verification codes or to pose as a real person.

What you can do here

How to generate a random phone number

Pick a country and, for the US or Canada, optionally a state or province, choose a format and press Generate. By default every US and Canadian number uses a real area code for the chosen place with the 555-0100 to 555-0199 exchange and line range, which the North American Numbering Plan keeps for fictional use, so nobody's phone rings if a number is dialled by mistake. Tick Show location to see which city each area code serves.

(512) 555-0183 (Austin, Texas)
(617) 555-0129 (Boston, Massachusetts)
+14155550166 (San Francisco, California)

Formats and valid-looking numbers

Output numbers as (213) 555-0147, 213-555-0147, 213.555.0147, E.164 (+12135550147, the format APIs such as Twilio expect) or international +1 213-555-0147. When a form rejects 555 numbers, switch Number range to Any valid-looking number: it follows NANP rules (exchange starting 2 to 9, no N11 codes) but can match a real subscriber, so never call, text or sign up with it.

Random US area codes

Set Generate to Area codes only for random area codes with the city and state they serve, from 233 area codes across all 50 states and DC plus 15 in Canada. Filter by state to list, say, Texas area codes (210, 214, 512, 713, 817 and more). It is handy for geography games, sorting and routing tests, and choosing a realistic area code for a fictional character.

What random phone numbers are for

Use them to test sign-up and checkout forms, seed a CRM or database, fill mock-ups and screenshots, or give characters in a story, film or game a number that cannot belong to anyone. They cannot receive SMS codes and must not be used to verify accounts or pose as a real person.

Frequently asked questions

Are these real phone numbers?

By default no. US and Canadian numbers use the 555-0100 to 555-0199 range reserved for fiction, UK numbers use Ofcom's 07700 900xxx drama range and Australian numbers use 0491 570xxx. The Any valid-looking number option may match a real line, so treat it as test data only.

Can I get a random phone number for a specific state?

Yes. Choose the state or Canadian province and every number gets one of that place's real area codes, such as 512 or 713 for Texas.

How do I generate random US area codes?

Set Generate to Area codes only, or open ?mode=area-codes. You get area codes with the city and state they serve, optionally filtered to one state.

What is the E.164 format?

E.164 is the international format with a plus sign, country code and number and no spaces, such as +12135550147. Most SMS and calling APIs require it.

Can I use these numbers to receive verification codes?

No. The numbers are not connected to any phone and must not be used for account verification, sign-ups or impersonation.
