Type one number per line and press Convert. Each line is written out in American English words using the short scale, with hyphens for 21 to 99 and no "and". Commas and underscores are ignored, a leading minus becomes minus, and digits after a decimal point are read one by one after point. Whole numbers up to 36 digits (the decillions) are supported.
7 -> seven
42 -> forty-two
1,234,567 -> one million two hundred thirty-four thousand five hundred sixty-seven
-3.05 -> minus three point zero five
To name any whole number, split its digits into groups of three from the right. Name each group as "hundreds, then tens and units", then append the scale word for that group's position. Compound values from 21 to 99 are hyphenated: twenty-one, forty-seven, ninety-nine.
1,234 -> one thousand two hundred thirty-four
58 -> fifty-eight
405 -> four hundred five
2,000,000 -> two million
English uses the short scale: each new scale word is 1,000 times the last.
| Value | Scale word |
|---|---|
| 103 | thousand |
| 106 | million |
| 109 | billion |
| 1012 | trillion |
On a cheque or contract the amount is spelled out to prevent tampering, with the cents written as a fraction over 100. For $1,234.56 you would write: one thousand two hundred thirty-four and 56/100 dollars. When there are no cents, use and 00/100 or the word only. Keep the figures and the words identical; if they disagree, most banks treat the written words as authoritative.
| # | Word | # | Word | # | Word |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | zero | 10 | ten | 20 | twenty |
| 1 | one | 11 | eleven | 30 | thirty |
| 2 | two | 12 | twelve | 40 | forty |
| 3 | three | 13 | thirteen | 50 | fifty |
| 4 | four | 14 | fourteen | 60 | sixty |
| 5 | five | 15 | fifteen | 70 | seventy |
| 6 | six | 16 | sixteen | 80 | eighty |
| 7 | seven | 17 | seventeen | 90 | ninety |
| 8 | eight | 18 | eighteen | 100 | one hundred |
| 9 | nine | 19 | nineteen | 1000 | one thousand |
British usage keeps it ("one hundred and five"); US usage drops it ("one hundred five"). Both are understood; be consistent within a document.
Prefix the spelled-out value with "minus" or "negative" yourself; the digit lookup ignores the sign.
