About this tool

Why Use a Word Counter?

A word counter helps writers, students, marketers, and SEO professionals stay within character or word limits. Twitter posts, Google meta descriptions, college essays, LinkedIn summaries, and SMS messages all have strict limits — exceeding them causes truncation or rejection. This tool counts words, characters (with and without spaces), sentences, paragraphs, and estimates reading and speaking times.

Reading and Speaking Time

Reading time is calculated at 225 words per minute (the average adult silent reading speed). Speaking time uses 150 words per minute — the recommended pace for clear speech in presentations, podcasts, and YouTube videos. Use these to estimate how long an article or script will take.

Common Character Limits

How does the word count work?

Words are counted by splitting text on whitespace and filtering empty entries. Hyphenated words like "well-known" count as one word, while "state-of-the-art" counts as one word too.

Is my text private?

Yes — all counting happens locally in your browser using JavaScript. Nothing is sent to any server.

What is keyword density?

Keyword density is the percentage of times a word appears relative to total words. SEO best practice is 1–2% for primary keywords; higher rates can look like keyword stuffing.
