HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the default photo format on iPhone and iPad running iOS 11 and later. It uses the HEIF standard, which compresses photos to roughly half the size of equivalent JPG files with the same visual quality. However, HEIC is not universally supported — Windows (without a codec), most web platforms, and many apps cannot open HEIC files natively.
Converting HEIC to JPG or PNG makes your photos universally compatible — with email clients, social media platforms, photo editing software, and Windows PCs.
This tool uses the heic2any JavaScript library, which decodes HEIC/HEIF data entirely in the browser using WebAssembly. Your photos never leave your device — the conversion happens locally. The decoded image data is then encoded to your chosen output format using the browser's Canvas API.
macOS has native HEIC support since macOS High Sierra. Windows 10 and 11 can open HEIC files only if you install the "HEVC Video Extensions" codec from the Microsoft Store (it costs $0.99). Converting to JPG is a free alternative that works everywhere.
At quality 90%+, the JPG output is visually indistinguishable from the original. HEIC and JPG are both lossy formats, but re-encoding from HEIC to JPG introduces a second compression step. For archival purposes, convert to PNG (lossless) instead to avoid any quality degradation.
Go to Settings → Camera → Formats and select "Most Compatible". This saves new photos as JPG. Note that this uses more storage space. Alternatively, AirDrop photos to a Mac or use iCloud — both can auto-convert to JPG when sharing with non-Apple devices.
