How to write bold text in a Facebook post
- Type the words you want to stand out in the first box, for example a headline, a price or an event date.
- Choose a style. Bold (sans) matches Facebook’s own sans-serif text most closely, so it looks like native bold. Bold (serif) is more formal and has a classic newspaper feel.
- Copy the result with the button or by tapping it.
- Paste into Facebook: a new post, a comment, a Page update, a group post, a photo caption, your Intro bio or a Marketplace listing. Then add the rest of your post in normal text.
To mix bold and normal words in one go, write the whole post in the composer and wrap the important words in **double asterisks**. This is the fastest way to get “Facebook bold text in post” formatting without pasting pieces one at a time.
Why this works: Unicode bold, not formatting
Facebook stores posts as plain text and ignores formatting you paste from Word or Google Docs. What survives is the characters themselves. Unicode includes bold, italic and other styled Latin alphabets in its Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block, originally for equations. The letter 𝗕 (U+1D5D5, mathematical sans-serif bold capital B) is a different character from B, so when you paste it Facebook shows it exactly as it is, in bold, on every modern phone and browser.
Underline and strikethrough work differently. They add a combining character after each letter: U+0332 draws a line underneath the letter before it and U+0336 draws a line through it. Because the base letters stay normal, those two styles are still searchable, but the line can look slightly broken between letters in some fonts.

Using bold text well on Facebook
- Bold the hook, not the whole post. The first line is what shows before “See more”. A bold headline there gets attention; a fully bold post is tiring to read and looks like spam.
- Keep searchable words plain. Facebook search, hashtags and link previews do not recognise styled letters. Write hashtags, business names, phone numbers you want tapped, and links in normal text.
- Think about screen readers. VoiceOver and TalkBack may read 𝗕𝗼𝗹𝗱 as “mathematical sans-serif bold capital B” and so on, or skip it. If a post carries important information, such as an event time, make sure it is also readable in plain text.
- Check length limits. Each styled letter counts as two characters in some limits because it sits outside the Basic Multilingual Plane.
- Groups with formatting: if a group shows the formatting toolbar (the Aa icon when you create a post), its native bold is better for accessibility and search. Use Unicode bold everywhere else.
Where bold text shows up correctly
Facebook on iPhone, Android, desktop browsers and the Lite app all render these characters, as do Messenger, Instagram and Threads. Very old Android phones (roughly Android 6 and earlier) and some feature phones lack the font and show boxes. If your audience includes such devices, test by viewing your post from another account or device before a big announcement.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make text bold on Facebook?
Facebook posts and comments have no bold button for personal profiles. Type your words above, copy the Bold (sans) or Bold (serif) result and paste it into the post. The bold look comes from Unicode characters, so it stays bold after you publish.
How do I bold only some words in a Facebook post?
Use the post composer: wrap the words in double asterisks like **this**, copy the result and paste it into Facebook. Only the wrapped words are converted; the rest of the post stays as normal, searchable text.
Does Facebook have a built-in bold option?
Only in some places. Facebook Groups that enable post formatting show a formatting toolbar with bold, italic and headings, and Notes-style long posts had one in the past. Regular profile posts, comments, Pages posts and Messenger do not, which is why Unicode bold is used.
Will bold text hurt my Facebook reach?
Facebook has not published any rule against it, but styled words are not matched by search, may be skipped by screen readers, and large blocks of it look spammy. Bold a headline, a price or a date, and keep the rest of the post in normal text.
Can I use bold text in my Facebook name?
Usually not. Facebook's name standards reject symbols, unusual characters and mixed character sets, so styled names are normally refused. Bold text works in posts, comments, bios, photo captions and Marketplace descriptions.
Why do numbers look normal in some bold styles?
Unicode includes bold digits only for the serif bold, sans bold, double-struck, sans and monospace alphabets. There are no bold italic digits, so numbers in the bold italic styles stay as ordinary numerals.
Does bold text work in Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp?
Yes, the same characters paste into Messenger, Instagram captions and bios. WhatsApp also has its own formatting: wrapping a word in single asterisks makes it bold inside WhatsApp only.
