Four ways to shuffle letters
| Style | “hello world” might become | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Shuffle all letters (letter randomizer) | lrhow eolld | Anagram puzzles, random strings from a fixed set of characters. |
| Scramble each word | olehl dlrow | Word scramble worksheets and “unscramble the word” games. |
| Keep first & last letter | hlelo wlrod | The famous “Cmabrigde” reading effect; text stays surprisingly readable. |
| Shuffle word order | world hello | Sentence-building exercises and randomising a list of words. |
By default every character, including spaces and punctuation, joins the shuffle — exactly like a classic letter randomizer, so “planet” might become “tnalep”. Tick Keep spaces and punctuation in place to shuffle only the letters and digits while the spaces, commas and full stops stay where they were. Leave the box empty to get a random ordering of the alphabet.
A fair shuffle
The tool uses the Fisher–Yates algorithm with random numbers from crypto.getRandomValues, so every arrangement is equally likely. (A common shortcut, sorting with Math.random() - 0.5, is noticeably biased toward keeping characters near their starting position.) Emoji and accented letters are treated as single characters and are never split in half. Press Shuffle again for a new result, or set Number of results to get up to 50 different scrambles at once, one per line.
Ideas for using scrambled letters
- Make a word-scramble or anagram worksheet for a class or a party.
- Create a jumbled clue for a puzzle hunt or escape room.
- Test how readable text stays when only the inner letters move.
- Generate a random order of letters for a game draw.
Common questions
How do I shuffle the letters of a word?
Type the word and the shuffled version appears straight away. Press Shuffle again for another random order, or set Number of results to see several at once.
What is a letter randomizer?
A letter randomizer puts the characters of your text in a random order. The Shuffle all letters style does this for the whole text, so “planet” might become “tnalep”.
Can I scramble each word but keep the words in order?
Yes. Choose Scramble each word to shuffle the letters inside every word while the words themselves stay in sequence, or Keep first & last letter to leave the outer letters of each word fixed.
Can spaces and punctuation stay where they are?
Tick Keep spaces and punctuation in place. Only letters and digits move, so the text keeps its word lengths and punctuation.
Is the shuffle truly random?
It uses an unbiased Fisher–Yates shuffle driven by the browser’s cryptographic random number generator, so every arrangement is equally likely.
Is my text uploaded?
No. Shuffling happens entirely in your browser.
