Random Dog Breed Generator

Pick a random dog breed from 123 real breeds, each with its AKC group, size and country of origin. Filter to small dogs, big dogs or a single group, and draw several at once without repeats.

Random dog breeds with real details

Every breed in the generator is a real, recognised breed, and each pick tells you three things: its AKC group (what it was bred to do), its size and its country of origin. That is enough to turn a random breed into a drawing prompt, a quiz question or a starting point for researching your next dog.

Common questions

How many dog breeds are in the generator?

123 recognised breeds across the seven AKC groups: Sporting, Hound, Working, Terrier, Toy, Non-Sporting and Herding. It focuses on well-known breeds rather than every rare breed.

Can I get a random small or large dog breed?

Yes. Click Small dogs or Large and giant dogs, or use the Size filter for small, medium, large or giant.

What do the AKC groups mean?

The American Kennel Club sorts breeds by their original job: Sporting dogs retrieve birds, Hounds hunt by scent or sight, Working dogs guard and pull, Terriers hunt vermin, Toy dogs are companions, Herding dogs move livestock, and Non-Sporting holds everything else.

Does it include mixed breeds like Goldendoodles?

No. Designer crosses such as Goldendoodles and Cavapoos are not recognised breeds, so the list sticks to purebred breeds with a defined standard.

Can I avoid repeats?

Keep No repeats on. The tool remembers earlier picks and cycles through every breed in the current filter before any breed repeats.
