The highlighter checks that the XML is well-formed, then colours tag names, attribute names, attribute values, comments, CDATA sections and processing instructions. A preview is shown below the output, and the output box holds the HTML (a <pre> with inline-styled spans) so you can paste it into a web page; for <note lang="en">Hi</note> the attribute lang is purple and "en" green.
