Transfer into S3 is free. Transfer to Amazon CloudFront is free. Transfer to another AWS service in the same region is free; cross-region transfer is billed at inter-region rates (about 0.02 USD/GB).
Charges this tool does not model
- Minimum storage duration: Standard-IA and One Zone-IA bill a minimum of 30 days per object, Glacier Flexible 90 days, Deep Archive 180 days. Deleting early still incurs the remaining charge.
- Minimum billable object size: 128 KB for IA and Glacier classes — a 10 KB object is billed as 128 KB.
- Retrieval fees: per-GB charges to read data from IA and Glacier classes, plus per-request retrieval for Glacier Flexible and Deep Archive (Expedited, Standard, Bulk tiers).
- S3 Intelligent-Tiering: a per-object monitoring and automation charge (about 0.0025 USD per 1,000 objects).
- Replication, S3 Inventory, Storage Lens advanced metrics, Object Lambda, and multipart-upload parts left incomplete.
Questions
How is storage billed?
Per GB-month. S3 Standard is tiered (first 50 TB / next 450 TB / over 500 TB); colder classes are a flat per-GB rate.
What about egress?
First 100 GB/month out to the internet is free, then about 0.09 USD/GB up to 10 TB in us-east-1. Transfer in and transfer to CloudFront are free.
Why is my bill higher?
Retrieval fees, 30/90/180-day minimum storage durations, the 128 KB minimum object size for IA/Glacier, Intelligent-Tiering monitoring, and replication are not in this estimate.
Does region matter?
Yes. us-east-1 and ap-south-1 are the cheapest; some regions run 10–40% higher. Use the multiplier for a rough adjustment.
